Umberger in Columbus, Sbisa in Philly
So Umby is sent to the Blue Jackets for the 19th overall pick. I can’t say I’m surprised. From reading between the lines in various articles and blogs regarding Holmgren’s contract negotiations with the 26-year-old forward, things were not going smoothly. And given Umberger’s proven ability to stick to his guns in negotiations with tough GMs – see his dealings with former Canucks’ GM Brian Burke – it makes sense that Holmgren chose to trade rather than lose a player for nothing.
The Flyers take Swiss defenseman Luca Sbisa with the 19th overall selection in 2008 Entry Draft. For the NHL’s video on Sbisa:
I know I cite Bill Meltzer often. However, he’s a specializes in prospects and writes the Across the Pond column for NHL.com. Therefore, I think he’s a great source for information about European draft pick like Sbisa.

Selecting a top-ranked defenseman is huge for the Flyers. While well-stocked at forwards (they have massive depth even without Umberger and Potulny), the Flyers lack strong prospects on defense and in goal. Sbisa additionally could prove a top 4 D with a skill set similar to Braydon Coburn’s.
