Game Predictions: 3/17/2008
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I was a little busy celebrating over the weekend, which explains my limited contributions to the blog the past couple days. But I’m back, so on to tonight’s games.
Colorado vs. Minnesota – I would call this the first game of the night. By the Conference standings, the Avalanche is 7th, and the Wild is in 3rd. But both teams are in the Northwest Division, have 84 points, and are currently in a three-way tie with Calgary for the division tie. A win would solidify either team. Colorado has played one more game than Calgary and the Wild; a win would give them a points lead and keep them in the running should the other two tie it up with their games in hand. The Wild only have 38 wins to Colorado’s 39, so a win tonight would give them an edge in tie breakers as well as points. – WILD
Phoenix vs. Vancouver – This is the second game of the night. Now, I know there are only two games, so making them both games of the night doesn’t raise their importance much. But the standings come into play in this game as well. Vancouver is chasing the top three in the Northwest division, trailing by only two points. The Canucks are also clinging to eighth in the conference by two points and a game in hand over Nashville. Meanwhile, the Coyotes are in 10th, five points behind the Canucks. Winning tonight keeps them in the running (though it’s slim – 8-1-1 down the stretch by Mirtle’s reckoning). – COYOTES
