Game Predictions 3/5/2008

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Carolina vs. Atlanta – One trade lost in the deadline shuffle happened a few weeks prior to the actual day: Jim Rutherford shipped Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore north to Ottawa in exchange for defeseman Joe Corvo and youngster Patrick Eaves. In 9 games as a Hurricane, Corvo has registered 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points. Eaves has 2 assists and is a +1, despite only getting fourth line time for Carolina. They could prove to be pivotal pieces as the Hurricanes try to maintain their hold on the Southeast division down the stretch. – HURRICANES

Washington vs. Buffalo – Another key game for the Sabres and the Capitals. Should Buffalo win tonight, the Sabres would take over the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference from the Philadelphia Flyers. Washington also needs every point available as they attempt to overtake Carolina in the Southeast. – CAPITALS

St. Louis vs. Detroit – Detroit was so dominant through the first two-thirds of the season that no one even imagined the recent slump was a possibility. Couple that slump with Detroit’s lingering difficulties against teams within its own Central division, and you have the makings of a good chance for spoiler St. Louis. – BLUES

Anaheim vs. Chicago – How I wish Jonathan Toews had never missed 16 games with a knee injury. Some have questioned whether a rookie who only plays in 64 games can still win the Calder Trophy. I say he absolutely deserves that award – no other rookie is so vital to his team that his very absence damages playoff dreams. – DUCKS

Phoenix vs. Dallas – I love the youth movement in Phoenix. They are truly a fun team to watch. But could someone please design them uniforms that are at least remotely attractive? Speaking as a marketer, the Coyotes should have a fairly young and hip fan base to appeal to in Phoenix, and uniforms that hearken back to the original six era without the strong brand appeal simply won’t cut it. Go for something more modern and sleek – that would fit what they’re trying to do on the ice as well. – STARS

Ottawa vs. San Jose – San Jose and Dallas are my two favorites to come out of the west. And wouldn’t it be intriguing if Ottawa were to fall out of the playoffs, leaving room for Toronto to sneak in? – SHARKS
